major accident averted

NEW DELHI: A major mishap was averted on Wednesday when the front bogie of a Delhi Metro running from Dwarka to Yamuna Bank derailed. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the incident occurred because of the train operator’s negligence. He has been suspended.

The mishap occurred at 3.20 p.m. when train no. 5015 starting from the down platform of Dwarka station and going towards Yamuna Bank, overshot the signal while changing tracks. Four wheels of the front bogie, D-313, burst through the point, derailed and travelled about 30 metres.

The train operator did not wait for the tracks to be ready before crossing over.

“Did not wait”

“Prima facie, the cause of derailment appears to be the train operator starting the train on manual mode without waiting for the ATP (Advanced Technology Programme) actualisation and crossed the signal when it was red,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

He said there were no injuries to either the passengers or the metro staff.

“Since the train had just started from Dwarka station, there were only 34 passengers on board. The passengers were evacuated and led safely to the station,” said a DMRC official.

Metro officials said there was no serious damage to the track, overhead traction or the train, as the front wheels came less than six inches off the track.

A 12-member rescue team was called from Najafgarh depot. It put the derailed bogie back on track after nearly three hours.

“Four sets of hydraulic jacks were used to put the front bogie of the train back on rail. The jacks were operated using portable gensets to lift the 40-tonne Metro coach,” said a DMRC official.

Delhi Metro Accident, Delhi Metro Bridge Accident

A large crack in a pillar of the under construction bridge of the Delhi Metro in south Delhi could have caused its collapse early Sunday, killing five people, say workers engaged at the accident site.

Five people, including a site engineer, were killed and 15 were injured in the accident that took place at around 5 a.m. at Zamrudpur near East of Kailash, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said.

Thirty workers of the contractor company Gammon India Ltd were present at the construction site when the bridge collapsed.

Many strongly criticised Gammon and DMRC authorities for negligence saying they had complained several times about a faulty pillar.

Said Kishan, a construction worker present at the site: “There was a crack in the pillar and we had complained to authorities on various occasions. The engineers came and suggested that support should be given to the pillar by inserting wires and putting boulders against the pillar.

Another worker said: We told them that the crack was there and if not corrected the pillar would be faulty and would cause the segment to come crashing down – now it has.http://i69.in/news/delhi-metro-accident-delhi-metro-bridge-accident.php

Three cranes collapse at Delhi Metro accident site

New Delhi: There was yet another disaster at the Delhi Metro rail construction site in south Delhi where an accident killed six labourers on Sunday.

At least three cranes collapsed at the accident site on Monday morning when clearing operations were on, injuring four workers.

According to initial reports, the cranes were trying to lift a steel girder but toppled over on buildings and slum clusters nearby.

The steel "launching girder" that holds up the elevated viaduct also came crashing down. The truck-mounted cranes had lifted the massive orange girder off the ground when they buckled under the weight.

Television pictures showed the multi-wheeled trucks lifting in the air, ending up in a vertical position.

Draft performance audit of Delhi’s Metro railway shows several irregularities

CAG’s report says DMRC finalized four property leases based on single bids, with the amount realized being only 0-3% over the reserve price, or the minimum price at which bids can be made. The audit attributes the low response to restrictive land use clauses in the allotment letters and “stringent qualifying criteria fixed for the bid process”.

Land development is a major source of revenue for DMRC. For the fiscal year ended March 2007, DMRC earned Rs222 crore from operations, Rs251 crore through real estate development and some Rs68.70 crore from other sources such as consulting.

In MCD-Metro war, casualty is 75 acres of prime Delhi land

As for the builders, they are caught in between. “We have submitted all our plans for approval but due to absence of clarity between DMRC and MCD, we are all stuck,” says an MGF spokesperson not wishing to be named.....
The MCD disagreed. At a meeting in January 2007, it rejected Uppal’s request saying the auction itself violated the terms on which land was allotted to DMRC. All other plans are being similarly rejected. For Parsvnath Builders, which bought seven plots for commercial development — it also has the contract for the Games village and the Akshardham Metro station — this has been a big blow. “All our plans for Delhi are on hold,” says a company official. “It all depends now on what happens to the MCD-DMRC battle.”
