major accident averted

NEW DELHI: A major mishap was averted on Wednesday when the front bogie of a Delhi Metro running from Dwarka to Yamuna Bank derailed. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the incident occurred because of the train operator’s negligence. He has been suspended.

The mishap occurred at 3.20 p.m. when train no. 5015 starting from the down platform of Dwarka station and going towards Yamuna Bank, overshot the signal while changing tracks. Four wheels of the front bogie, D-313, burst through the point, derailed and travelled about 30 metres.

The train operator did not wait for the tracks to be ready before crossing over.

“Did not wait”

“Prima facie, the cause of derailment appears to be the train operator starting the train on manual mode without waiting for the ATP (Advanced Technology Programme) actualisation and crossed the signal when it was red,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

He said there were no injuries to either the passengers or the metro staff.

“Since the train had just started from Dwarka station, there were only 34 passengers on board. The passengers were evacuated and led safely to the station,” said a DMRC official.

Metro officials said there was no serious damage to the track, overhead traction or the train, as the front wheels came less than six inches off the track.

A 12-member rescue team was called from Najafgarh depot. It put the derailed bogie back on track after nearly three hours.

“Four sets of hydraulic jacks were used to put the front bogie of the train back on rail. The jacks were operated using portable gensets to lift the 40-tonne Metro coach,” said a DMRC official.

  1. Yesterday whatever happened was the 2nd of its kind. Last year, a similar kind of accident occured in Panjagutta Bridge in Hydrabad. It is the same story, time and again, Ministers giving away contracts to renowned contractors, taking a bribe for themselves, which leads to the contractors using sub-standard materials. I wonder who will use this metro when it is up and running..there has got to be some accountability for these matters. This become frequent with Delhi Metro. Now the blame game will start between contractors, consultant and client.

Last time DMRC blamed contractor for similar incident make tall claims of do's & don'ts...and issue so called stern warnings!!! The ultimate responsibility lies to DMRC for choosing contractor and consultant... An over complicent organization....who's all in all found fault in Hyd Metro..ignoring thr own.....shame Lets wait for blame game to start......

This accident was certainly avoidable, labourers saw cracks in the bridge and had informed the contractors previously, but he didn't pay much attention. I wonder why Indian engineering is so lax in quality in general. Don't these construction engineers and contractors realize that if they build faulty cracked pillars at this stage itself, tomorrow one of their own family members may die when a metro train derails due to it?

This is all because our schools and colleges don't teach basic values like consideration. This mishap is due to lack taking safety precautions expected from a construction of this nature. The site engineer and seperintendung engingneer should have given strict instructionon the safety meaures to be adopted and implemened for such constructions. In case it was given then the site supervoser did not take care to implement It is serious lapse and their part.
